Tory MP Michael Fabricant hits back at colleague Huw Merriman laughing at ‘wig’ | Politics News
A Tory MP has hit out at a colleague accused of mocking him for “wearing a wig” in scenes captured on live TV.
Michael Fabricant, known for his signature blonde mop, was targeted as he addressed Theresa May at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday afternoon.
Over his shoulder Conservative backbencher Huw Meriman is captured pointing at him and appears to mouth “it’s a wig” as he gestured lifting it off.
The pictures were broadcast live on TV channels, with Mr Fabricant seemingly oblivious to his colleagues’ smiles.
A Twitter user captured the video and asked who the MP was “pointing out this the chap speaking is wearing a wig”.
Mr Fabricant, a former Conservative vice-chair, responded by naming Mr Merriman, saying he “realised no-one knows him”.
“A newish member, a little short sighted, and who doesn’t yet realise that PMQs are televised, bless,” he wrote.
“I know people are annoyed about his antics, they have been calling my office, but he’ll eventually learn how to behave.”
Twitter users rallied behind Mr Fabricant, one commenting: “Always behave as if your mother was watching you.”
Another wrote: “I am very disappointed in my MPs behaviour sitting behind you Michael, and can only apologise on behalf of his constituents for his crass stupidity.
“You may show him this tweet and inform him the people of Bexhill and Battle are not amused with his behaviour and should apologise.”
Mr Merriman did not respond to a request from Sky News to clarify his comments.
